Lesson 24: Grobby partitions a set of 10 into 2 partsThrough appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to recognise and understand what happens when quantities (sets) are partitioned and combined.TasksThe children, in pairs are tasked to find and record ways to make 10 using 2 sets. They use 2 strings to make two circles/hula hoops. Into the circles they distribute their 10 bricks. Additionally, they draw a garden with 10 flowers.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to find ways to make 10 using 2 sets of bricks%u2022 We are learning to find the total of 2 sets when combined%u2022 We are learning to draw and count 10 objectsProcedureGather all the children together on the floor. Set down the 2 hula hoops and the %u2018+%u2019 sign between them, and the equals sign at the end.Set down the 10 bricks above the hula hoops.Ask the children: What have I got on the floor? This should elicit: Teacher, we have 2 hula hoops, 10 bricks and an %u2018adding sign or plus sign%u2019 and %u2018an equals or makes sign%u2019.Ask a child to take some of the bricks and place them in the red hoop e.g. 3. Ask another child to take the remaining bricks and place them in the blue hoop. How many bricks had we to start with? (10) Have we still got 10? How are the 10 now arranged? Record as 3 + 7 = 10.How can we be sure that 3 bricks %u2018+%u2019 7 bricks, make 10 bricks altogether? We combine and recount. Recombine, recount and record the answer as 3 + 7 = 10.Now place the 10 bricks once again outside the hula hoops and find other ways to separate/partition and then combine the bricks to make 10. Record all the ways as you go.MaterialsA set of 10 bricks, 2 small hula hoops (1 red and 1 blue - different colours are preferable as they allow you to talk about the contents of each without confusion), a large cut out %u2018+%u2019 sign, and an %u2018equals to%u2019 sign, the task sheet and two 30cm strings for each pair.50
