Lesson 21: Grobby learns timeAnalog clocks are less in evidence today but children still need to learn how to tell the time from them. Learning outcomesWe are learning to tell time on the hour using an analog clock.MaterialsAn analog clock, a digital clock, watches and some self-made cardboard analog clocks with hands that the children can manipulate.ProcedureStart with the question: What do we use to tell time? (Take a selection of answers from raised hands). Are all clocks/time-pieces the same? (Talk about clocks that come in all shapes and sizes and that today they will be using an analog clock, or a clock that has rotating hands.Show students an analog clock as you say %u201canalog clock%u201d. Point out the features i.e. rotating hands of different size, 12 numbers, positioning of numbers, hands move in a %u2018clockwise%u2019 direction all the time etc.The long hand is the minute hand. It shows the passing of time minute by minute. It moves slowly. The short hand is the hour hand. It designates the hour. It moves very slowly. Where do you see clocks? (List student responses on the whiteboard).Ask children to share activities that they engage in during the typical school day, from the time they get up, until they go to bed. As they say a time, move the hands forward to show it on the analog clock. Use the following statement stem to gather times: %u201cI%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026. at%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026..%u201dGive each child an analog paper or plastic clock. Call out times on the hour for activities you do during the day and as you do so, they must move the hands to show that time e.g. I walk my dog every morning at 8 o%u2019clock.TasksGive out the task sheet. Children place bricks on their side, on the times as called by the teacher, who circulates the room, watching to see if children place them correctly thus demonstrating understanding, for example:%u2022 Place a yellow brick on 2 o%u2019clock%u2022 Place a green brick on 10 o%u2019clock%u2022 Place a red brick on 8 o%u2019clock%u2022 Place a light-blue brick on 5 o%u2019clock%u2022 Place an orange brick on 9 o%u2019clock%u2022 Place a dark-blue brick on 3 o%u2019clockRepeat a number of times.Finish with the children writing the times onto the bricks beneath the clocks.44
