Lesson 25: Grobby counts to find the largest setThrough appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to develop an awareness that the purpose of counting is to quantify and be able to use a range of counting strategies for a variety of purposes.TasksAsk the children to complete the task sheet. In each row, colour the set with the most bricks.Working in pairs, using strings and bricks, children construct and set out, each of the 4 tasks in turn. They decide which of the 3 sets has the most bricks and then colour that set on the task sheet.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to count sets of bricks%u2022 We are learning that the last number in the count indicates the quantity in a set%u2022 We are learning to choose the set with the largest quantityProcedureOn the whiteboard draw 3 sets of bricks e.g. a set of 8, a set of 7 and a set of 9, each set enclosed in a circle. Now gather the children on the floor. Using 3 strings, make 3 circles on the floor. Add the brick quantities to each circle i.e. 8 bricks into the first, count 7 into the second and 9 into the third.Ask: Which circle has the most bricks? How will we find out? How do we know?Do some more constructions.Materials3 pieces of different coloured 30cm string and 2 sets of 6 bricks per pair.52
