Lesson 26: Grobby breaks and remakes 10%u00a0Through appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to recognise and understand what happens when quantities (sets) are partitioned and combined.TasksThe children, in pairs are tasked to find and record ways to partition and make 10 using various set combinations.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to break 10 up into 3 and 4 parts/sets%u2022 We are learning to combine sets of bricks to make a total of 10ProcedureGather all the children together on the floor. Set down the strings to make 3 or 4 circles, approximately 15cm apart. Place %u2018+%u2019 signs between the circles and the %u2018=%u2019 sign at the end.Set down 10 bricks above the string circles.Ask a child to take some of the bricks and place them in the first circle (3). Ask another child to place some in the second circle (1). Ask a third child to place some more in the third circle. (4) Finally, ask a child to place the remaining bricks in the fourth circle. (2) How many bricks had we to start with? (10) Have we still got 10? Yes. How are the 10 now arranged? There are 3 bricks in the first circle, 1 brick in the second circle, 4 bricks in the third and 2 bricks in the fourth circle, how many is that altogether? To find how many altogether, we must add/combine them together. We use the %u2018+%u2019 to show that we are adding them together. Place a %u2018+%u2019 between the circles. How can we be sure that 3 bricks %u2018+%u2019 1 brick %u2018+%u2019 4 bricks %u2018+%u2019 2 bricks, make 10 bricks altogether? We combine and recount. Recombine, recount and record the answer as, 3+1+4+2=10.With this approach, you are helping to make the abstract a little more immediate and tangible. We overlay the whole process with language and talk the children through it, helping to build out their understanding of the concept. We are supporting the language and thinking process with strong concrete visuals at every step. Now place the 10 bricks once again outside the string circles and find other ways to separate and then combine the bricks to make 10. Record all the ways as you go, on a large sheet of paper or on the whiteboard.Be sure to cover the %u20180%u2019 set too e.g. show that 5+3+2+0=10.MaterialsA set of 10 bricks, 4 strings to make circles, 3 large cut-out %u2018+%u2019 signs, 1 equals sign %u2018=%u2019 and the task sheet.54
