Lesson 33: Grobby sorts tall and small objectsThrough appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to demonstrate an awareness of measuring length.TasksColour the taller/tallest set of bricks in each stack. Make patterns as you colour. Learning outcomes%u2022 We are developing an understanding of the concept of height through exploration, discussion, and use of appropriate vocabulary%u2022 We are learning to compare heights to determine which is the tall/taller/tallest or small/smaller/smallest%u2022 We are learning to compare and order objects according to height%u2022 We are learning to compare and order things by how much of a particular attribute (physical quantity) they have relative to each otherMaterials4 sets of 6 bricks per group of 4 students.ProcedureCompare items around the classroom in relation to height. Make statements such as:%u2022 The eraser is taller than the pencil sharpener%u2022 The bin is taller than the bucket%u2022 The lunch box is smaller than the brick boxMake three-way comparisons, such as:%u2022 The crayon is tall, the colouring pencil is taller, but the ruler is the tallest%u2022 The 330ml drinks can is tall, the 500ml bottle is taller, but the 1L bottle is the tallest%u2022 The shrub is tall, the hedge is taller, but the fir tree is the tallest%u2022 Jack is tall, Mary is a little taller, but teacher is still the tallest person in the room%u2022 The jug is small, the mug is smaller, but the cup is the smallestIn groups of 4, ask the children to make and draw brick towers of various sizes from 3 to 10. There should be a different colour brick at the top of each of the towers. This allows them to refer to the yellow tower or the blue tower or the green tower etc. Ask them to stand them in a row from smallest to largest. Ask them to make comparative height statements about the brick stacks such as:%u2022 The red tower is taller than the green tower, but smaller than the orange tower%u2022 The 7 stack is taller than the 5 stack%u2022 The 4 stack is smaller than the 6 stack%u2022 The 6 stack is small in comparison to my chair, the 4 stack is smaller, but the 1 stack is the smallest%u2022 The 10 stack is taller than the 7 stack by 3 bricks%u2022 The difference between the 4 stack and the 7 stack is the same as between the 7 stack and the 10 stack. The difference is 3.Record some statements on the whiteboard. Ask the children to use their brick pile to build an apartment building with 12 floors and an apartment building of just 6 floors. Compare both. Make some statements. 68
