Lesson 30: Combining brick sets with GrobbyIn this lesson, children are finding the total of two addends and matching each to the correct total.TasksFirst, do the calculations and match each total to a brick in the stack. Once completed, check answers by making, combining and counting the total of the brick stack.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to make and combine sets to find the total%u2022 We are learning to match the total to the correct answerProcedureThis is an activity to check if children are confident with mental arithmetic and to see if they are getting to know their addition facts pairs within totals to 10.The teacher calls out: What does 3 plus 2 make? The children do the mental calculation and choose the answer card that they think is the total e.g. 5. Next, they make a set of 3 with bricks and a set of 2, then combine both into a single stack, recount and check if they were correct.Repeat the tasks a number of times with the whole class:%u2022 What does 4 plus 3 make?%u2022 What do I get if I add 5 and 4?%u2022 What is 2, add on 4?%u2022 What is 5 plus 5?%u2022 What is two 3s?Ask questions in many different ways, thus getting the children both comfortable and flexible with the language and thinking processes of mathematics.Materials 2 sets of 6 bricks per pair/numeral cards 1 to 10.62
