Lesson 32: Grobby%u2019s number line to 10In this lesson we will focus on the %u2018count on%u2019 strategy. Tasks1. Using Grobby%u2019s Number Line to 10, the children find the total by using the %u2018count on%u2019 strategy2. Draw a stack of 9 bricksLearning outcomesWe are learning to add numbers by %u2018counting on%u2019 from the bigger number.%u2018Counting on%u2019 in maths is a mental math strategy used to add numbers. Using this technique, a student starts with the larger number and counts on with the other addends to get to the sum.ProcedureFor example, if the number sentence is 5 + 3, the student will identify 5 as the larger number and count on three more - 5 %u2026 6, 7, 8. The answer or the sum total is 8. Using the count on maths strategy, students have to be able to %u2018hold%u2019 a number in their minds and then add on to it.This strategy can be taught incrementally using Grobby%u2019s Number Line to 10 and a couple of sets of 6 bricks. To illustrate the efficiency of the count on strategy, do the 5+3 sum in two ways.5+3= Place 5 bricks on their ends on the task sheet number line. We have 5. Now we need to add 3 more. Add 3 more onto the line. We now have 8 altogether. So, 5+3=8However, we could just as easily have done it a different way, a faster way.5+3=We can assume that we have 5, or they are at 5 already. Just add 3 more bricks onto the line after 5. That takes us to 8. 5+3=8Repeat and model the %u2018count on%u2019 strategy with the class for the following sums:4+3= 6+4= 3+2= 5+5= 2+6= 3+7= Note: For a sum such as 2+6= children choose the bigger number to start with, and then add on 2 more. This is efficient.66
