Lesson 17: Grobby teaches the days of the weekWho doesn%u2019t like predictability? Not knowing what to expect can be somewhat unsettling, especially for children. Children do better in an environment that is organised and well planned. Knowing the days of the week can help children understand and accept planned events e.g. on Tuesday, Granny is coming for a visit. We can%u2019t go to the park today; we can go Friday. We will put up our Christmas tree on Wednesday.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning the days of the week%u2022 We are learning to recite and to place the days of the week in order%u2022 We are learning to spell and write the days of the weekMaterials7 cards with a day written on each card in thick black marker. Sets of 6 bricks and one copy of the task-sheet per student or one per pair.ProcedureTeach the days of the week vocabulary. Gather the children on the floor or around your table. Deal out the seven cards, one for each day, onto the mat in a random order, face up.What have we got here? How many days? What day is it today? Who can pick up and hand me that card? What day was it yesterday? What day will it be tomorrow? What days do we not go to school? Who can pick up the 5 days on which we go to school? What is the first day of the school week? What is the last day before the weekend?TasksPass each pair of children a copy of the task sheet. 1. Stand a green brick on Tuesday. What does Grobby like to do on Tuesday?2. Stand a red brick on Saturday. What does Grobby like to do on Saturday?3. Stand a light blue brick on the day before Saturday4. Place a yellow brick on the day after Sunday5. Place a dark blue brick on the day that follows Tuesday6. Place an orange brick on Thursday. What does Grobby like to do on Thursday?Compare your bricks to that of the student you are paired with. Have you both got the same sequence? Yellow on Monday, Green on Tuesday, Dark Blue on Wednesday, Orange on Thursday, Light Blue on Friday, Red on Saturday and no brick on Sunday.Repeat a few times using a different sequence of call outs. Then have the children complete the task sheet by filling in the blanks by pencil. Finally, once the sheets are completed and corrected, get the pupils to cut out therectangles with the 7 days. Practice shuffling them up and then quickly putting the days in sequence again from Monday to Sunday. (Try other sequences too e.g. start with Wednesday.)Rhyme timeSolomon Grundy: Born on a Monday, Christened on Tuesday, Married on Wednesday, Took ill on Thursday, Grew worse on Friday, Died on Saturday, Buried on Sunday.
