Lesson 15: Grobby partitions a set of 8 into 2 parts Through appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to recognise and understand what happens when quantities (sets) are partitioned and combined.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to find ways to make a total of 8 using 2 sets%u2022 We are learning to find the total of 2 sets when combined%u2022 We are learning to draw and count 8 objectsMaterialsSets of 6 bricks, 2 hula hoops or alternatives (1 red and 1 blue - different colours are preferable as they allow you to talk about the contents of each without confusion), a large cut-out %u2018+%u2019 sign, the task sheet and two 30cm strings for each pair.ProcedureGather all the children together on the floor. Set down the 2 small hula hoops and the %u2018+%u2019 sign between them.Set down the 8 bricks above the hula hoops.Ask the children: What have I got on the floor? This should elicit: We have 2 hula hoops, 8 bricks, an %u2018adding sign%u2019 or %u2018plus%u2019 sign and an %u2018equals/makes%u2019 sign. It is important that they all understand the signs.Ask a child to take some of the bricks and place them in the red hoop e.g. 5. Ask another child to take the remaining bricks and place them in the blue hoop. How many bricks had we to start with? (8) Have we still got 8? How are the 8 arranged/divided? Record as 5 + 3 = 8.How can we be sure that 5 bricks %u2018+%u2019 3 bricks, make 8 bricks? We combine and recount. Recombine, recount and record the answer as 5 + 3 = 8.Now place the 8 bricks outside the hula hoops again and find other ways to separate and then combine the bricks to make 8. Record all the ways.TasksThe children, in pairs are tasked to find and record multiple ways to make 8 using 2 sets. They can also use 2 strings to make two circles/hula hoops. Into the circles they distribute their 8 bricks. Additionally, they draw a ladybird with 8 spots.32
