Lesson 12: Grobby%u2019s Six Bricks number lineA number line to 12 supports the forward and backward count sequence to and from 12. It assists children with adding and recording two and three sets, counting on, counting back and so much more. Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to add 2 sets to 12 %u2022 We are learning to add 3 sets to 12%u2022 We are learning to count on when addingMaterialsPhotocopy the page opposite onto card. Cut out and glue the 3 sections together to create the number line to 12. Create enough number lines to support paired work at a whole-class level.ProcedureThere is a whole array of work that you can do over time and on an ongoing basis, such as:%u2022 The forwards number count sequence - children stand their bricks 1 by 1 along the number line and say the number as they go - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 %u2026%u2026etc.%u2022 The backwards number count sequence - children stand all their bricks 1 by 1 along the number line and say the number as they go - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. There are 12 bricks. Now take off the bricks 1 by 1 and say the numbers as you go back or down the number line: 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 %u2026%u2026.etc.%u2022 As the children count up and down the number line, point out the number intervals. We start at %u20180%u2019, next is %u20181%u2019, then %u20182%u2019, followed by %u20183%u2019 %u2026%u2026 etc.%u2022 Adding two sets and finding the total, maximum of 5 e.g. 2+1. The children place 2 bricks on the number line and that builds to 2. They then add 1 more to find that 2+1 together makes 3. Record the answer: 2+1=3%u2022 Adding three sets and finding the total, maximum of 5 e.g 1+2+1. The children place 1 brick on the number line, then add 2 more to make 3, plus 1 more brings the total to 4. Record the answer: 1+2+1=4%u2022 Adding two sets with totals to 12, adding three sets with totals to 12, adding doubles to 12%u2022 Adding two, three and four addends together%u2022 Practicing counting on%u2022 Finding the missing part of the set e.g. 4 + = 7%u2022 Subtraction e.g. 6 %u2013 4 = (place 6 on the line, take away 4, 2 remain)This number line is designed for hands-on learning using the concrete/pictorial/abstract approach to mathematics. One can start with the concrete and move to the abstract e.g. set out 4 bricks on the number line and then add 3 more bricks and record as 4+3=7. Perhaps you start with the abstract and move to the concrete e.g. begin with 5+4 = , set out the 5 bricks, followed by 4 more bricks and record the total as 9. There are so many ways to use your Six Bricks number line to 12 to build concepts, skills and understanding in the early years.26
