Lesson 9: Grobby partitions a set of 7 into 3 partsThrough appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to recognise and understand what happens when quantities (sets) are partitioned and combined.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning to break 7 up into 3 parts or 3 sets%u2022 We are learning to combine 3 sets of bricks to make a total of 7%u2022 We are learning that sets and objects can be partitioned in different waysMaterials2 set of 6 bricks, 3 lids from tins, 2 large cut-out %u2018+%u2019 signs, 1 equals sign %u2018=%u2019 and the task sheet.Talk aboutGather all the children together on the floor. Set down the 3 lids and the 2 %u2018+%u2019 signs between them and the %u2018makes/equals%u2019 sign. Set down the 7 bricks above the lids.Ask the children: What have I got on the floor? This should elicit: We have 3 lids, 7 bricks and 2 %u2018adding signs%u2019 or %u2018plus signs%u2019 and %u2018an equals/makes%u2019 sign. Place the three lids approximately 15cm apart.Ask a child to take some of the bricks and place them on the first lid e.g. 4. Ask another child to place some more on the second lid (2). Ask a third child to place the remaining brick(s) on the third lid. How many bricks had we to start with? (7) Have we still got 7? How are the 7 now arranged? There are 4 bricks on the first lid, 2 bricks on the second lid and 1 brick on the third lid, how many bricks is that altogether? To find how many altogether, we must add them together. We use the %u2018+%u2019 to show that we are adding them together. Place a %u2018+%u2019 between the first and second lid, and another %u2018+%u2019 sign between the second and third lid.How can we be sure that 4 bricks %u2018+%u2019 2 bricks %u2018+%u2019 1 brick, make 7 bricks altogether? We combine and recount. Recombine, recount and record the answer as, 4+2+1=7.With this approach, you are helping to make the abstract a little more immediate and tangible. We overlay the whole process with language and talk the children through it, helping to build out their understanding of the concept. Now place the 7 bricks once again outside the lids and find other ways to separate and then combine the bricks to make 7. Record all the ways as you go.Be sure to cover the %u20180%u2019 set i.e. 4 bricks on first lid, 3 bricks on second lid and %u20180%u2019 bricks left for the third lid. Discuss and record (4+3+0=7).TasksThe children, in pairs are tasked to find and record ways to partition and remake 7 using 3 sets.20
