Lesson 6: Grobby partitions a set of 7 into 2 partsThrough appropriately playful learning experiences, children should be able to recognise and understand what happens when quantities (sets) are partitioned and combined.Learning outcomes%u2022 We are learning that sets and objects can be partitioned in different ways%u2022 We are learning to break 7 bricks into two sets/parts, before reconstituting them back to 7 through addition%u2022 We are learning to find ways to make 7 using 2 sets%u2022 We are learning to find the total of 2 sets when combined%u2022 We are learning to count, combine and record 7 objectsMaterialsTwo sets of 6 bricks, 2 small improvised hula hoops (1 red and 1 blue - different colours are preferable as they allow you to talk about the contents of each hoop without confusion), a large cut out %u2018+%u2019 sign, a large cut out %u2018=%u2019 sign and the task sheet.Talk aboutGather all the children together on the floor. Set down the 2 hula hoops, the %u2018+%u2019 sign between them and the %u2018=%u2019 sign at the end.Set down the 7 bricks above the hula hoops.Ask the children: What have I got on the floor? This should elicit: We have 2 hula hoops, 7 bricks and an %u2018adding sign%u2019 or a %u2018plus sign%u2019 and a %u2018makes sign%u2019. Ask a child to count the bricks to be sure there are 7 there.Ask a child to take some of the bricks and place them in the red hoop e.g. 4. Ask another child to take the remaining bricks and place them in the blue hoop. How many bricks had we to start with? (7) Have we still got 7? How are the 7 now arranged? We had 7, which we then divided into a set of 4 and a set of 3. When we added them together, we discovered that 4 and 3 make 7 altogether. Record as 4 + 3 = 7.How can we be sure that 4 bricks %u2018+%u2019 3 bricks, make 7 bricks? (Click all 7 together, recount and restate the total of 7).Now place the 7 bricks once again outside the hula hoops and find other ways to separate and then combine the bricks to make 7. Record all the ways as you go.Tasks1. The children, in pairs are tasked to find and record 7 ways to make 7 using 2 sets2. Draw a tree with 7 apples14
