Learning outcomes

This course aims to:

  • Introduce a thinking skills programme to teachers who wish to develop the thinking skills ability of their students.
  • Equip teachers with the knowledge and understandings necessary to create & support a thinking skills orientated classroom environment.
  • Assist teachers to distinguish between the traits of a ‘Good Thinker’ as opposed to a ‘Weak Thinker’.
  • Introduce teachers to the ‘9 Thinking Tools’ through focus lessons.
  • Engage teachers with a wide range of published literature on the subject of thinking skills.
  • Know the essential ingredients of creative thinking ability.
  • Introduce teachers to the concept of the ‘Six Thinking Hats’.
  • Help teachers better understand that when children have opportunities to play with ideas in different situations and with a variety of resources, they discover connections and come to new and better understandings and ways of doing things and that adult support in this process enhances their ability to think critically and ask questions.
  • Enable teachers to better appreciate that a ‘Thinking Skills’ approach to the curriculum reaps rich rewards and requires little resource wise, other than an informed, skilled, creative and alert teacher.
  • Look at, review and score one’s own ‘Teacher Practice in Literacy’ as part of the SSE process.
