I45 - What Do You Think?

A thinking skills approach to education.

As educators we know the critical importance of the ability to think.

This course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to create, cultivate and nourish thinking skills in their students.

The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order at any time.

Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.

On completion of this course each participant can download their CPD record and Certificate of completion. The Certificate of completion demonstrates your achievement in completing this professional development course.

Learning outcomes

Participants will better understand that when children have opportunities to play with ideas in different situations and with a variety of resources, they discover connections and come to new and better understandings and ways of doing things and that adult support in this process enhances their ability to think critically and ask questions.

Course participants will also be better equipped with the knowledge and understandings necessary to create and support a thinking skills orientated classroom environment.

Modules

01 - Understanding the different modes of thinking: Critical, Lateral, Parallel, Creative, and Constructive thinking. More importantly though is the fact that they will learn the nine basic tools of thinking focus and be able to teach these skills simply in the classroom.
02 - Development and understanding of three focus skills: Alternative Focus, Brainstorm Focus and Consequence Focus.
03 - Development and understanding of three more focus skills: Aims Focus, Viewpoint Focus and Priority Focus.
04 - Understanding of lateral and creative thinking processes and it’s essential ingredients.
05 - ‘The Six Thinking Hats’, their purpose and application within the curriculum.
