Are you looking for some refreshing ideas for teaching Mathematics in Year 1 and Year 2? We’ll not only ‘sum up’ all the key teaching ideas for you, we’re confident we’ll increase your available resources by ‘multiples’!

This self-paced on-line course engages teachers in considering many aspects of and teaching approaches in each of the 5 strands of mathematics: Number, Algebra, Shape & Space, Measures, Data and Algebra.

Upon completion, teachers will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key mathematical concepts and processes, and the most appropriate approaches for assisting children in Year 1 and Year 2 acquiring those concepts through stimulus activities. Exciting interactive resources will be provided to support the teaching of each strand unit.
 
The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order at any time.
 
Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.
 
On completion of this course each participant can download their CPD record and Certificate of completion. The Certificate of completion demonstrates your achievement in completing this professional development course.

Learning outcomes


On completion of this course, teachers of Year 1 and/or Year 2 will be able to identify and incorporate the recommended and most successful approaches to developing pupil mathematical skills in any of the strand areas; to plan and deliver a Maths lesson on any strand unit, where the lesson plan will embody an ‘Assessment for Learning’ approach, with the learning intentions & learning outcomes being made explicit for the pupils. Teachers will also be able to identify, select, deploy and integrate into their lessons, the best freely available interactive and print resources, in order to make concepts more visual, more explicit and subsequently more understandable using the power of ICT.

Modules

01 - Teachers will be introduced to the recommended approaches, methodologies and best practices for developing pupil mathematical skills, through relevant professional development articles and teaching resources.

02 - Teachers will work through the strand units for NUMBER, engaging with and compiling the best freely available interactive and print resources for developing NUMBER skills and supporting strong NUMBER concept acquisition.

03 - Teachers will work through the strand units for MEASURES, engaging with and compiling the best freely available interactive and print resources for developing skills around MEASURING and supporting strong concept acquisition.

04 - Teachers will work through the strand units for SHAPE & SPACE, engaging with and compiling the best freely available interactive and print resources for developing skills in the strand units of SHAPE & SPACE and supporting strong concept acquisition.

05 - Teachers will work through the strand units for DATA & ALGEBRA, engaging with and compiling the best freely available interactive and print resources for developing DATA & ALGEBRA skills and supporting strong concept acquisition in this area.
